Annelies: Your Words are Still Powerful and Necessary

November 19, 2014November 19, 20142 Comments

Last night I went to see the Handel Society of Dartmouth College perform Annelies by James Whitbourn based on Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl I really had no idea how someone could put the diary to music. I was wondering if we were about to see Anne Frank: The Musical and if … Continue reading Annelies: Your Words are Still Powerful and Necessary

In Search of a Title

October 6, 2014October 6, 20146 Comments

I decided it was time to name my book. It isn’t finished yet, but the title has been a thorn in my side for a while now. I started with a working title of “Tutti & Popje." It was cute and it worked in my mind. I thought the book would be told from the … Continue reading In Search of a Title

Bigotry, Bullies and Brundibar

March 31, 2014March 31, 20142 Comments

The original opera was written in 1938 by a Czech composer, Hans Krasa with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister. Krasa, a Jew, was imprisoned at Theresienstadt and later murdered in Auschwitz. Hoffmeister survived the war, but died … Continue reading Bigotry, Bullies and Brundibar

While we were visiting, there was also a school group there. From the students' accents, I assume they … Continue reading Theater Lesson

Why I’m Writing about the Holocaust – Part 2

December 11, 2013December 11, 2013Leave a comment

This is a powerful piece (click on the link below) by Naftali Bendavid that appeared in the Wall Street Journal last week. It is about the last survivors of the Holocaust telling their stories. According to the popular press there were only 100 child survivors of Theresienstadt. My mother was one of them. I don’t know … Continue reading Why I’m Writing about the Holocaust – Part 2

I Am Not Trayvon Martin

July 18, 2013Leave a comment

I watched this video yesterday and I knew I had to share it in my blog. I do not know who this young lady is, but I want to thank her for her words of wisdom. I am not Trayvon Martin. I am George Zimmerman. I have privilege and I hold stereotypes. I want the … Continue reading I Am Not Trayvon Martin
